Education Program at The Noble Hands Zimbabwe Trust

At The Noble Hands Zimbabwe Trust (TNHZT), we believe that education is a fundamental right and a powerful tool for breaking the cycle of poverty and marginalisation. Our Education Program is dedicated to ensuring that marginalised children and youths, particularly those with albinism, have access to equitable and inclusive education opportunities. We address the barriers that prevent these children from accessing quality education and provide the necessary support to help them thrive academically and socially.

The Challenge

In Zimbabwe, many children face significant barriers to accessing education, including:

  • Household Poverty: Families cannot afford school fees, uniforms, or stationery.

  • Abuse and Discrimination: Marginalised children, especially those with albinism, often face stigma and abuse, which discourages school attendance.

  • Remoteness: Children in rural areas struggle to access schools due to long distances and poor infrastructure.

  • Poor Infrastructure: Many schools lack adequate facilities, resources, and trained teachers.

  • Socio-Cultural Norms: Gender biases and cultural practices often prioritise boys’ education over girls’.

  • Vision Impairment: Children with albinism face additional challenges due to vision impairments, which are often unaddressed, affecting their ability to learn.

These challenges result in high dropout rates, low literacy levels, and limited opportunities for marginalised children to reach their full potential.

What We Do

Our Education Program focuses on removing these barriers and creating an inclusive learning environment for all children. Key initiatives include:

  1. Provision of Educational Materials:

    • We distribute stationery, uniforms, school bags, and shoes to children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

    • For children with albinism, we provide large-font textbooks, magnifying devices, and spectacles to support their vision needs.

  2. Payment of School Fees:

    • We cover school fees for children who would otherwise be unable to attend school due to financial constraints.

  3. Advocacy for Inclusive Education:

    • We lobby for policy changes to ensure that children with albinism and other marginalised groups are included in government programs like the Basic Education Assistance Module (BEAM).

    • We advocate for the provision of large-print examination papers for pupils with vision impairments.

  4. Vision Support for Children with Albinism:

    • We provide vision screening, spectacles, and magnifying devices to help children with albinism overcome vision challenges and succeed in school.

  5. Community Awareness and Sensitization:

    • We conduct awareness campaigns to educate communities about the importance of education and the rights of children with albinism and other marginalised groups.

How We Are Making a Difference

Through our Education Program, we have achieved the following impacts:

  • Over 200 children with albinism are back in school, receiving the support they need to learn effectively.

  • 60 pupils with albinism have access to large-font textbooks, making it easier for them to read and study.

  • Distributed over 200 magnifying devices to pupils with albinism since 2022, helping them overcome vision challenges.

  • More than 500 pupils with albinism have access to large-print examination papers, ensuring they can participate fully in exams.

  • Successfully lobbied the Government of Zimbabwe in 2021 to include children with albinism in the BEAM program, providing them with financial support for their education.

Our Approach

  1. Inclusivity:

    • We ensure that no child is left behind, regardless of their background, disability, or socioeconomic status.

  2. Partnerships:

    • We collaborate with schools, government agencies, and other organizations to amplify our impact and advocate for systemic change.

  3. Sustainability:

    • We focus on long-term solutions, such as policy advocacy and community empowerment, to create lasting change.

  4. Holistic Support:

    • Beyond educational materials, we address the social and emotional needs of children, ensuring they have a supportive environment to learn and grow.
